Well, 2020 has been a year to remember…of course for all the wrong reasons. However, for most of us it has also been a year of self introspection and realignment. The silver lining! Now, if you have had enough of those random Netflix series and Instagram feeds lets focus our attention and time on more rewarding aspects of life.
Cut to chase here are 5 tried and tested insider tips that no one will tell you.
BE A SPY!
Landing your dream job is not very different from finding your dream partner. You got me right. You follow the same process. Now you don’t just break it to your high school sweetheart. Do you? You follow the protocol. Start the conversation with his closest buddy, almost stalking him on social media, bumping into him at his most visited night club yet making it look like a coincidence. Finding your dream job isn’t much different. You gotta put the same effort.
It is important to know your existing competitor and his/her competencies. Know the skills you have and more importantly those you don’t possess. See if they can be acquired. In most cases they can be. Just do it!
Connect with them on professional networks like LinkedIn and who knows competitors can collaborate too.The world is changing eh. Collaboration is the new buzzword. Close the network gap!
BE UPFRONT
If your competitor isn’t that friendly I would advise you to still continue the hardwork yourself. Develop relationship with the hiring manager and express your interest for the role and why you are the best fit. Here the results aren’t immediate but it does workout in the long run.Just stay at it but make sure not to be too pushy.
BE THE BEST
Become the talk of the industry. Be so good in your existing role that you will end up at the top of the heap.Ne plus ultra! Most people don’t need a resume and for some an informal conversation over coffee closes the hiring. Well of course on a positive note. Build yourself and your brand. If you are in the same industry as your dream job this strategy works wonders. Time to hit a home run!
BE AN INSIDER
Before you give up on your dream because you feel that you have tried every possible thing and there seems to be nothing that can help you take that coveted role here’s a tip that kinda rings a bell. Did you overlook job rotation? Most organizations today offer an opportunities for employees to shift between different job roles and assignments across verticals. Take advantage of this opportunity.
First take up a role within the organization even if it’s not the one you always wanted. May be in a different branch or at a different location or a different role within the same vertical. Be an insider first. Things just get way easier when you are already within the organization.
BE SOCIAL
Sometimes networking events like seminars, conferences, corporate dinners, executive retreats and social get togethers turn out to be the best places to catch a future employers attention. If you are someone who is first to call it a day so that you can catch your favorite Netflix series back home or someone who sticks to their desk during lunch it’s time to reconsider and if you are an insider already Congrats! It’s time to grab that coffee and fika like the Swedes. Strike up or join in a conversation and make a splash!
One more important note…
Your courage and resilience to go after your dream is ultimate. How badly you want it decides how early you will have it. Your tenacity to withstand and uphold will get you what you have always aspired for. Your dreams need you.
